An expressive original coastal watercolor signed W. Hayden and dated 1931, depicting a quiet shoreline settlement with cottages, trees, sandy dunes, and a winding tidal inlet.
Executed in a loose, painterly manner, the composition combines soft washes of blue and violet with warm ochre, rust, and green. The contrasting colors and energetic brushwork lend the scene a distinctly early 20th-century character.
The watercolor is presented in an ornate molded frame with richly textured foliate decoration and an aged bronze-gold finish. The elaborate frame provides a striking contrast to the painting’s relaxed coastal subject.
Signed “W. Hayden ‘31” at lower left. The artist’s identity has not been conclusively established.
