A striking pair of American gilt brass five-light candelabra by H.N. Hooper & Co., circa 1840. Each is centered by a classical figure of Atlas supporting a large orb, rising from a richly ornamented pedestal base. Four scrolling candle arms surround a taller central candle cup, with foliate decoration carried throughout.
The combination of classical imagery, sculptural form, and elaborate gilt brass construction makes these especially decorative examples of mid-19th-century American lighting.
Age-appropriate surface wear and variation to the gilding are present throughout, contributing to the warm antique patina.
