A beautifully executed antique watercolor landscape by George Fotherly Hargitt (1837–1926), signed and dated 1913, depicting the dramatic mountain scenery of the Illecillewaet Valley in British Columbia, Canada.
The composition features a rushing mountain stream cascading through a rocky gorge beneath a snow-covered peak, surrounded by dense evergreen forest. Layered transparent washes and opaque highlights create remarkable atmospheric depth, capturing the rugged beauty of the Canadian wilderness.
An inscription at the lower right appears to identify the subject as a stream in the Illecillewaet Valley, a region of the Selkirk Mountains historically associated with the Canadian Pacific Railway, early tourism, and landscape painting.
George Fotherly Hargitt was a Scottish-born landscape painter active in Canada and associated with the Western Art League in London, Ontario. Recognized for his accomplished watercolor technique, Hargitt’s work is represented in the collection of Museum London, including his 1921 watercolor The Irish Coast.
Signed and dated 1913 at lower left.
