An exceptionally atmospheric antique watercolor landscape by George Fotherly Hargitt (1837–1926), signed and dated 1912, depicting a secluded cemetery surrounded by dense woodland, with an old stone church tower rising above the trees.
Scattered gravestones emerge from deep blue-green shadows beneath mature trees, while the church tower is partially obscured by foliage. The artist’s skillful use of transparent washes, layered color, and opaque highlights creates a wonderfully mysterious composition with remarkable depth and filtered light.
Particularly interesting is the placement of the artist’s pencil signature and date, incorporated into the face of a foreground gravestone at the lower left.
George Fotherly Hargitt was a Scottish-born landscape painter active in Canada and associated with the Western Art League in London, Ontario. His accomplished watercolor technique and landscape subjects earned recognition during his career. His work is represented in the permanent collection of Museum London, Ontario.
The unusual cemetery subject, muted palette, and evocative atmosphere make this painting particularly appealing to collectors of antique landscape painting, Gothic interiors, and dark-academia décor.
