Large-scale antique American oil on canvas painting titled “In Hours of Ease” by Frederick Ballard Williams (American, 1871–1956). This atmospheric figural garden scene depicts elegantly dressed women gathered within an idyllic classical landscape framed by towering trees and architectural columns.
The composition reflects the romantic, decorative sensibilities associated with early 20th century American Impressionist and Beaux-Arts influenced painting, with luminous color handling, soft diffused light, and richly painterly brushwork throughout. The scene possesses an almost theatrical elegance, blending Rococo-inspired leisure imagery with the dreamy tonal atmosphere Williams became known for.
Signed lower left and retaining multiple historical exhibition and identification labels verso, including references to the Grand Rapids Art Museum and a 1923 exhibition by the Grand Rapids Art Association. The reverse also retains typed and handwritten title labels identifying the work as “In Hours of Ease.”
