A beautifully atmospheric English portrait dating to circa 1820, depicting a young woman in an olive-green Empire-period gown and white wrapped cap. Her direct expression, restrained palette and dark background give the portrait a wonderfully quiet presence.
Oil on canvas, unsigned. The painting shows extensive age-related craquelure along with areas of wear and historic repairs visible from the reverse. It remains highly decorative and presents beautifully.
The portrait has been newly presented in an ornate gilt frame with scrolling foliate ornament and an elaborate openwork crest.
