Antique 19th-century hand-worked copper water ewer, or aftaba, of traditional Indo-Persian form.

The vessel features a cylindrical lower body with rounded shoulder, tall neck, elongated tapered spout and slender S-curved handle. Simple applied zigzag decoration encircles the shoulder, while the upper rim has an unusual hand-formed scalloped edge. Constructed from worked sheet metal with separately joined elements and visible hand-finishing throughout.

The surface appears to retain remnants of an old tinned finish over copper or copper alloy, now heavily worn to a warm brown and gray patina with areas of oxidation and verdigris.

The aftaba was traditionally used throughout Persia, India and the broader Islamic world as a water vessel for washing and ablutions.

The original hinged lid is no longer present; the surviving hinge attachment remains at the upper rim. Considerable surface wear, irregularities, old dents, oxidation, finish loss and evidence of prolonged use are present throughout, all consistent with the utilitarian nature and age of the piece. Please refer closely to photographs for condition.

19th century, probably Indo-Persian.

Approximately 11.5 inches high × 11.5 inches from handle to tip of spout. Opening approximately 3.25 inches across; base approximately 4.25 inches diameter.
