A beautifully atmospheric early 20th century pastoral landscape depicting a shepherd and flock of sheep gathered beside a quiet woodland stream. Towering trees frame the composition while soft light filters through the forest, illuminating the grazing animals and reflecting gently off the water.

The painting is signed E. A. Olewine and dated 1915 in the lower right corner.

Works like this reflect the enduring popularity of pastoral landscapes in American painting at the turn of the 20th century. Artists of this period were heavily influenced by earlier European traditions, particularly the romantic rural scenes associated with the Barbizon school and other continental landscape painters. The result is a distinctly American interpretation of the European pastoral ideal, celebrating quiet rural life, nature, and agricultural landscapes.

The composition has a wonderful sense of depth and calm, with the sheep rendered in soft tones against the darker woodland interior and the reflective water in the foreground. Scenes featuring sheep have long been favored by collectors because of their connection to classical pastoral imagery and traditional landscape painting.

The painting is housed in an ornate gilt frame that complements the warm tones of the scene and enhances its period character.

Condition

There is a small paint loss visible near the sheep in the lower portion of the composition. The frame shows expected age-related wear including small chips and losses to the gilt finish. These condition characteristics are consistent with age and do not detract from the overall presentation of the piece.
