Antique 1911 leather-bound edition of English Seamen in the Sixteenth Century by James Anthony Froude, a history of English sailors, naval expansion and exploration during the Tudor period based on lectures Froude delivered at Oxford in 1893–94.
Published in London by Longmans, Green & Co. in 1911, New Impression.
This copy is particularly attractive as a contemporary English school prize binding. Bound in full brown calf with raised spine bands, extensive gilt decoration and gilt border to the covers. The front is stamped “Sutton County School.”
The original presentation label remains inside, recording the book as a Sutton County School prize awarded to T. E. Dowson for Form Prize II in July 1913. It also retains a small William Pile Ltd., Booksellers & Stationers, Sutton & Wallington label.
Measures approximately 7 1/4 inches tall × 5 inches wide.
Antique condition with substantial age-related character including rubbing, scratches, staining and wear to the leather, along with scattered spotting and toning internally. Previous owner’s name and 1932 date written on a blank page. Binding remains handsome and highly decorative. Please review photographs closely for condition.
A wonderful piece for a collection of British maritime history, Tudor history, antique leather bindings, naval books, or English school memorabilia.
