Antique 1882 French volume of Mémoires de Monsieur Claude, Chef de la Police de Sûreté sous le Second Empire, Volume V, published in Paris by Jules Rouff.
Written under the name Monsieur Claude, former chief of the Paris Sûreté, these memoirs recount criminal investigations, notorious cases and policing in 19th-century France during the Second Empire. This fifth volume opens with “Les Sept Victimes” and discusses the notorious Troppmann murder case, one of the most infamous French criminal cases of the period.
Beautiful period binding with a leather spine, raised bands, gilt lettering and decorative gilt devices, marbled paper-covered boards and striking marbled endpapers.
Published Paris, 1882 by Jules Rouff. Volume V.
Measures approximately 7 × 4.75 inches.
Good antique condition for its age with considerable rubbing and surface wear to the marbled boards, edge and corner wear, fading and rubbing to the leather spine, and scattered age toning/foxing internally. Binding and pages show expected age-related wear. Please review photographs closely for condition.
A particularly interesting 19th-century French volume combining true crime, police history and Second Empire history, as well as a handsome decorative antique book.
