1793 French Revolution 5 Livres Assignat, Framed

An original French Revolutionary assignat dating to 1793, issued during the First French Republic.

The note is denominated “Assignat de cinq livres” and dates to 10 Brumaire, Year II of the French Republican calendar, corresponding to October 31, 1793. Assignats were a form of paper currency issued during the French Revolution, making this a surviving piece of the extraordinarily turbulent period following the fall of the French monarchy.

This example bears the printed signature of Laporte and series number 15278. The surrounding typography includes revolutionary references to the French Republic and the laws against counterfeiting.

The original paper shows significant age-related toning, creasing, edge wear and losses consistent with its more than 230-year history. It has been professionally presented beneath glass with a wide mat in a distressed pale blue-gray wood frame.

A fantastic small piece of genuine French Revolutionary history that works equally well as a historical collectible or as part of a collected gallery wall.
