This is an exceptional late-19th-century Victorian landscape painting titled “The Fern Gatherers,” signed by British School painter J. Morris and presented in its original ornate frame. The canvas measures 20 × 30 inches (frame 25 × 34 inches), a premium decorative size highly sought after by collectors and designers.
Painted circa 1875–1890, this pastoral scene captures two women gathering ferns in a luminous, rolling English countryside. The Victorian fascination with botany, rural labor, and idealized natural settings is fully embodied here—gentle light, atmospheric depth, and exquisite foliage work bring the composition to life.
The painting has an older wax–resin lining, a traditional 19th-century conservation method, along with a glossy aged varnish typical of the period. The frame is original to the work and shows authentic surface wear consistent with age.
Signed J. Morris in the lower right. The original brass title plate, “THE FERN GATHERERS,” remains intact—an uncommon and desirable feature.
A beautiful example of Victorian naturalism, perfect for cottage interiors, traditional homes, English country décor, or art collectors looking for a romantic narrative landscape with depth and charm.
