This mixed-media portrait is signed “J. W. Dodge” and dated 1881 and is attributed to John Wood Dodge (American, 1807–1893), a 19th-century American portraitist known for refined likenesses and delicate handling of features and skin tones. Dodge’s work is represented in major museum collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, underscoring his established place within American portrait history.

The sitter is presented in a direct, frontal composition with a lace bonnet and dark dress, rendered with an expressive realism that reads immediately across the room. The work is executed in gouache, watercolor, and pastel, a combination that allows for both soft tonal transitions and crisp detailing in the face and fabric.

The portrait measures 15 × 16.5 inches framed and remains in a period-style frame with a decorative gilt inner liner that complements the era and presentation. Light surface wear and age-related toning are present, consistent with a 19th-century work on paper and long-term framing.
