This is a late 19th-century American moonlit river landscape, painted in a style that blends the romantic drama of Hudson River School influence with the softer atmospheric qualities associated with early Tonalism. The glowing moon over still water, the silhouetted trees, and the distant hill forms all reflect the American fascination with poetic nocturnes during the period.
Rendered in cool blue-green tones with gentle transitional blending, the painting carries a peaceful but slightly mysterious nighttime ambiance. The composition includes a winding riverbank, scattered rocks catching reflected moonlight, and a faint built structure in the distance — classic features of American regional landscape painting from the 1880–1900 period.
The painting remains stable overall, with minor areas of paint wear, a handful of pinpoint losses, and a few tiny pinhole punctures that do not compromise display from a normal viewing distance. The surface shows expected age-related craquelure. The antique gilt frame, with Victorian foliate molding, retains its original presence with areas of rubbing, small losses, and age-consistent wear.
