Phelps shop of Rochester, New York — a known 19th-century supplier of artists’ materials and picture frames — helping date this work firmly to the 1880–1900 period.
The scene captures a dramatic autumnal forest with towering rock formations, russet and gold foliage, and a deep green valley rolling into the distance. The painter had a strong command of naturalistic color and light: the warm fall tones contrast beautifully with the cool sky and atmospheric mountains in the background. This composition reflects the influence of the American Hudson River School and the regional painters of Upstate New York.

All original stretchers and keyed corners remain intact.
