An atmospheric late-19th-century coastal seascape painted by British artist William H. Rumble. This large 20x30 oil on canvas captures a misty shoreline with birds skimming the water and weathered rock formations rising along the coast. Rumble’s palette leans soft and marine-toned — pale blues, greens, and muted earth tones — giving this piece the serene, moody quality that Victorian maritime painting is known for.
The surface shows beautiful, genuine craquelure throughout, with areas of thicker impasto in the rockwork and smoother glazing through the sky and sea. The canvas is original to its stretcher and shows age-consistent wear along the tacking edges, as well as a few small areas of paint loss at the lower edge (shown clearly in photos). The back of the piece displays the correct oxidation and stretcher style for the 1880–1910 period. It presents beautifully as is, and could be easily tightened or lightly cleaned by a conservator if desired.
Signed W. H. Rumble at lower right.
