This is a richly detailed mid-19th-century still life oil painting, depicting a bright red lobster, sliced lemons, and a beautifully decorated lidded beer stein. This palette — deep reds, citrus yellows, and warm wood tones — is classic for American and Continental still lifes c. 1860–1880, and the handling of light across the shell and lemon flesh is especially skilled.
The painting is executed on its original 9 x 12 stretched canvas, secured with old keys, and housed in a period walnut frame with pegged joinery and a gilt slip. The frame itself is a gem — warm tone, hand-carved accents, and a mellow patina that only comes with age.
The composition references the tradition of European “luxury still lifes,” where food, drink, and vessels symbolized comfort, hospitality, and the sensual pleasures of life. Lobsters in particular were associated with celebration, abundance, and status, while lemons symbolized freshness, protection, and refinement. The beer stein adds a rustic Germanic note, grounding the still life in everyday domestic pleasure.
