This antique Victorian writing slope dates to the 1870s and was designed for use on the go—ideal for a traveler, officer, or student in the 19th century. Constructed from richly grained wood (likely mahogany or rosewood veneer), this compact lap desk features original brass corner strapping, a flush-set lock with its original working key, and tight joinery throughout.
The interior originally housed a tooled leather writing surface, now missing, exposing the wooden base beneath. It retains its functional hinged design with inner compartments for writing supplies. A beautiful and functional example of campaign-style furniture with undeniable character.
Era: Circa 1870
Style: Victorian / Campaign
Material: Mahogany likely
Features: Brass straps, original key, flush-set lock, tight joints, missing leather
Condition: Surface wear from age; leather inlay missing; structurally sound
Included: Desk with original key
An ideal piece for collectors of antique writing boxes or Victorian travel items — and an excellent candidate for restoration.
