A scarce Spanish-language edition of Samuel Richardson’s celebrated epistolary novel Clarissa, printed in Madrid in 1806 by Fermín Villalpando. This is Volume V of the multi-volume set, translated from the French edition by Le Tourneur into Spanish by Don Joseph Marcos Gutiérrez.
Bound in full calf leather with gilt-tooled spine and marbled endpapers, this handsome pocket-sized book reflects the popularity of English sentimental fiction across Europe during the early 19th century. The text is remarkably clean, with only minor ink notes and light wear consistent with age.
Richardson’s Clarissa was one of the most influential novels of the 18th century, and this early Spanish edition is an unusual survival, offering collectors both literary and historical significance.
